“I’ve learned that some people are here to gracefully gain something from you, and that some people are here to generously offer something for you to gain from them, but most people are here to watch you fail.”

I’m no expert. Far from it, actually. I can’t remember a single day since starting down this avenue when I wasn’t unsure or lacking confidence. Nor has a single day passed when I wasn’t stumped, dumbfounded, surprised or made to feel like a dolt. Some days are better than others but, not a single one has been without challenges or moments of learning and, maybe that’s the true moniker for a non-expert; a fool who is always being schooled.
Though, it hasn’t been time wasted; this I can promise. For all that schooling, I’ve learned much. Some things about fish but, many things about people.
I’ve learned that people are curious and, though they may fail to actualize it within themselves, they are always hunting for the next best thing – rather it be by deliberate & acknowledged, conscious effort or by subconsciously capitulating to the forces of whichever metaphoric wave they’re presently riding. I’ve learned that some people are here to gracefully gain something from you, and that some people are here to generously offer something for you to gain from them, but most people are here to watch you fail. I’ve learned that, between the spanning pods of those rubber-neckers who are eagerly anticipating your next fiery crash, there are pockets of good people and they’ll come to you over time, from all over the world. I’ve learned that, beyond money or notoriety, what people actually want is to be part of a successful team. I’ve learned that humans are mirrors, and that a genuine utility which can be applied in an effort of self-exploration is to realize that much of what you see in others, for which you might despise or pity, is often a trait you recognize in yourself. I’ve learned that people are easily manipulated, conditioned and trained; and that understanding this is a detriment to your soul.
I’ve substantiated with much anecdotal evidence what I learned long ago; that there is a vast difference between nice men and good men.

I’ve learned that recognition is a fickle and meaningless thing, and that the true testament to your performance is a referral or return. I’ve learned that generally, in any campaign to grow or to succeed, we are alone. That most people, even if they wanted to help, are too wrapped up in their own ambitions to consider helping you achieve something above the normal standard. I’ve learned that hierarchies exist in every condition and that it’s not necessarily a performance based program they are built on.
I’ve learned that more seldom than not, though you were right yesterday, it’s unlikely that you are right today, and that people can sense when you’re operating or otherwise relying on old information. I’ve learned that people will trust you if given good reason to, and that betraying such a trust is a tragedy in itself. I’ve learned that a big smile and a solid fist bump, though subtle, are the perfect congratulatory placations to boost the confidence in any uneasy sportsman. I’ve learned that we all need checks & balances in our lives and they are best found in our fellow enthusiasts.

From the middle seat view of my glass boat, I’ve learned much about people but more so, I’ve learned much from people and, that’s really what these words I’m writing now are about. I love this gig for many reasons but, more so than any other, is the fact that I am directly plugged into a network of fellow anglers who bring to the table their experiences from a lifetime of engaging in this sport. I’m the true benefactor and I simply don’t harbor the adequately creative mind to conjure words profound enough to authentically emulate my gratitude. Just know that I appreciate you all.
From where I sit, I get to be the person who watches you fail and as a result, I also get to be the person who offers something for you to gain and in return, I also get to be the person who gains something from you…
I just ask that it’s your loyalty, your tall tales, and your big smile.
